Join SLCDA for a night of learning and fun! We will prepare samples with produce from the market, discuss tips for shopping in season, and experience the health benefits of eating fresh!  Call Catie at 517-374-5700 or email catie@southlansing.org to RSVP, space is limited.

Helpful Resources

SLCDA programs would not exist without our very important partners: Michigan Department of Community Health, Ingham County Health Department, and Michigan Nutrition Network.

Mchigan State University Extension is a great resource for improving family health on a budget.  Check out these tips for incorporating more fruits and vegetables in your family meals.  The page includes recipes, a healthy grocery list, and a handout on how to prepare cheap and healthy meals.

The New Food Pyramid

Do you remember the old Food Pyramid from elementary school? Thats ok, neither do we! What you should know is that it has changed and the new pyramid is no longer one size fits all. MyPyramid.gov offers new food pyramids for preschoolers, young children, and even pregnant mothers.

Youth Nutrition

Studies show, children are more likely to eat food that they helped pick out, prepare, and/or serve.  SLCDA staff organize and conduct programs at Lansing's Wexford Montessori Magnet School and  the South Side Community Center to help children recognize and prefer fruits and vegetables by gardening and cooking with them.

Check out these easy child friendly healthy recipes that will enable you to incorporate more fruits and vegetables in your families everyday meals at home.   We encourage you to cook with your family at least one day a week; not only does it promote that oh so precious family time, but it also allows you to pass along cooking skills and healthy eating habits.

Good Food Talks

Do you learn better by doing? Need a healthy, fun night out? Check out the Good Food Talks presented by SLCDA! Good Food Talks are workshops, lessons, and classes that SLCDA staff coordinate to help South Lansing residents learn about great tasting, healthy food.  Check out the facebook pictures from our latest "Eat Fresh from the Market" workshop.

Good Food Talks can come to you, too! SLCDA has hosted "Good Food Talks" at requested sites:

  • South Brook Villa Apartments hosted a four week series in February where discussion was focused around senior citizen health.
  • New Mt. Calvary Baptist Church hosted a four week series focusing on African American health and diabetes prevention.

Call or email SLCDA today if you have a group that may be interested in a series or a one time workshop.
